Kickboxing classes at the Academy are geared more towards fitness then self defence, competition or fighting ability, although the content is real kickboxing and not as in most commercial gyms an aerobics class where they punch and kick. Therefore you do not have to worry about having to spar in class, or getting hurt from being punched or kicked. If you want to spar we have a group that like to spar after class. It is possible to grade in the class if you wish but it is not compulsory.
What is the class format? What can I expect?
The class is done to music, it starts with the warm up, jogging round the room, gently moving the arms and legs, preparing them for the class ahead, from there goes on to practice all of the basic punches, kicks and strikes. The class continues with boxing and kicking combinations. The class then pairs up, and with a partner pad work drills are practised in 2 minute rounds, with one minute with a left lead and one minute with a right lead (this is for self defence purposes and also to give a balanced workout to the body). The session concludes with circuit training, skipping, press-ups, crunches, squats and medicine ball work.
